About Allison Saddlery

Allison’s Saddlery carries one of the widest ranges of equestrian items for almost all equestrian disciplines. There is also a workshop and factory facility to do repairs and manufacturing of, not only equestrian goods, but also shoes, bags and other leather items.

The History of Allisons Saddlery

Allison’s was founded by JW Allison, who started business as a butcher in 1895. Finding additional income from his animal skins by selling straps, saddles and other leather goods to the public, Allison started advertising as a saddler in 1902, and in 1904 built the beautiful building in Church Street which remained the business premises until 1987 when it moved to Commercial Road. The business traded in those premises for 10 years before relocating to Victoria Road, where it is more spacious and there is an abundance of parking for customers.

The business has changed hands multiple times throughout the years with the Shaw family taking the reins in 1991. Corinne Shaw said her son, Gordon Shaw, who manages the shop, also makes the saddles by hand, and some of their saddles are even exported.

This horse sculpture, made of solid wood, has become an iconic feature in Allison’s Saddlery.

Made in Glasgow over a century ago, the wooden horse remains a popular fixture at the entrance of the shop and is about as old the shop itself.
